MHS Winter Guard 2008 I just wanted to take a second and let you know about the great success our winter guard program is having this year. Our JV group competed at Lamar HS last Friday and won 1st place in their division. They are currently the highest ranked guard in that classification in the area. The Varsity group competed on Saturday in the Winter Guard International Dallas Regional. This is a major competition that is very similar to the marching band competing in the Bands of America regionals. This was the first time ever for the MHS winter guard to compete in a Regional. Out of 39 groups from all over the state in prelims our guard made finals and finished in third place! Additionally, because this was a national based competition our score is used by Winter Guard International to create a rankings list that compiles all of the scores from all of the regionals around the country. This list is updated weekly and is used to let everyone know how they are faring on a national level. As of this morning the MHS Varsity guard is currently ranked 5th in the country out of 212 groups that have competed in WGI Regionals so far! The groups that go to these regionals are the top groups from the country as the Regionals do not have various levels of competition like our local contests do. So it is safe to say that out of the countless numbers of high school winter guard programs in the country the groups that compete in these competitions are the very best. We are now preparing to take the Varsity guard to Houston next weekend for another Regional competition.
So congrats to everyone involved! Our next competition is this Saturday, March 1st at Aledo HS. It is the championship competition for the JV group so it will be their last of the season. The Varsity group still has a while left, but please come out and support the kids as much as possible. The Wester guard will perform at 12:00pm, our JV guard will perform at 12:42 pm, and the Varsity will be at 8:38 pm.
Thanks! Matt Garrett
Winter Guard is an indoor color guard activity, derived from the outdoor summer activity that is commonly part of marching band or drum corps. Unlike color guard, which performs outdoors on a football field (and is part of a marching band or drum corps), winter guard is performed indoors, usually in a gym or indoor arena, during the winter season. Also, there is no band involved. Guards perform to a recording of various musical genres. Their show has a selection of music, classical to contemporary. A winter guard unit performs using dance, acrobatic features, and most of all, with various pieces of equipment. While guard equipment can vary from anything to everything, flags, rifles, and sabres are the main pieces of equipment. Guard members toss, spin, and do much more with their equipment, which can change throughout their show. Major competitions worldwide are sanctioned and managed by Winter Guard International.
